The Children’s Learning Institute recently conducted a survey to explore how early childhood educators are using artificial intelligence (AI) within Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS). Developed by Yusra Ahmed, PhD, the survey was completed during the 2024–2025 school year. Responses were gathered from 101 professionals—teachers, administrators, instructional coaches, and district-level staff—who shared their experiences and perceptions of AI in early learning settings.
The results revealed that AI adoption for MTSS purposes remains limited. Nearly 70 percent of respondents reported that they do not use generative AI tools for MTSS, and only about 11 percent indicated using AI for specific components such as screening assessments or individualized education plan development. Among those who have integrated AI into their work, ChatGPT emerged as the most frequently used tool, followed by MagicSchool.ai. Educators noted that ChatGPT helps simplify complex MTSS concepts and supports tasks like content generation, information processing, and document editing. MagicSchool.ai, on the other hand, offers a suite of more than 80 AI-powered tools designed to reduce workload through pre-configured prompts for curriculum planning and other specialized tasks.
When asked about AI’s potential benefits, educators expressed strong agreement that these tools could assist with lesson planning and creating personalized learning experiences. There was moderate agreement about AI’s ability to enhance student engagement, suggesting that early childhood educators currently see AI as more valuable for teacher-facing tasks rather than direct interaction with students. Despite these promising perceptions, barriers remain. Respondents cited limited technical knowledge, inconsistent institutional support, and concerns about the accuracy of AI-generated content as key challenges to adoption.
