At the sixth annual UTHealth Houston Cares student‑led health fair, Reach Out and Read Texas helped make the day not only healthier but more joyful for local families. This year marked an exciting new partnership: alongside medical, dental, and vision screenings, children were greeted with brand‑new books to take home—introducing a literacy component that beautifully complemented the fair’s focus on child‑friendly care.
As part of the Children’s Learning Institute at McGovern Medical School, Reach Out and Read Texas works through pediatric clinics to help families build strong reading routines from an early age. Seeing the program’s mission woven into a bustling community health event helped reinforce how strongly early literacy and children’s health go hand in hand. Families left with more than new knowledge about their health—they left with stories to share, moments of connection, and books that will spark curiosity long after the fair ended.
The UT Physicians article linked below highlights the powerful impact of this event, from life‑changing health screenings to hands‑on learning opportunities for medical students.
